This is a nice looking original CDV image of a Civil War Union sailor. The soldiers and sailors would buy these from the photographers in the cities or even from traveling photographers that would come to camp or they made it into town. They would purchase them in small quantities to send home to family or friends. This one shows the Union sailor in his dress uniform. He is wearing his double breasted military coat. Around his waist he wears the 2-piece style of belt buckle and by his side he has his officer sword cradled in his arm. The back of the card stock has the photographic gallery marking of Appleton of New York. It has some condition problems as you can see but the image itself has wonderful content.
