Here is a beautifully designed memorial to a Civil War soldier that gave the ultimate sacrifice. This one was to honor Waldo Merriam who served with the Sixteenth Massachusetts Infantry. It is a beautiful hand detailed Memorial Lithograph image. This is an engraved and hand-colored soldier's service memorial lithograph fulfilled in manuscript at center for Lieutenant Colonel Waldo Merriam. Merriam was an officer with the 16th Regiment of Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry who was killed at the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House. It is beautifully framed in a wooden frame that measures 17 inches by 21-1/2 inches in overall size. The center of the frame measures 11 inches by 15 inches. It was lithographed by J. H. Bufford in Boston after a W. F. White design and is so marked along the bottom edge. The imprint at bottom right records "Entered according to Act of Congress in the year 1864 by W. F. White". There is an open section in the top that was to allow a carte de visite photograph of Merriam but it has been lost to the ages. The hand written ink inscription dedication reads: "Lieut. Col. Merriam / 16 - Mass Vols - / Killed in Battle / of Spotsylvania Va. / May 12th 1864 / Aged 24 years". Waldo Merriam enlisted was commissioned a first lieutenant on August 1, 1861. Before his death at Spotsylvania Court House, he was wounded in action at the Battle of Gettysburg on July 2, 1863. The piece is accompanied by a printed record of his service. The info has an image of the Colonel so you might be able to get another image of Merriam. It is matted and framed to the overall size of 17" x 21.5". Not examined outside of the frame.
