VERY COOL STORY! CDV Image of "General Ulysses S. Grant" Not Really!
Click on an image to enlarge
This is one of the more interesting CDV images of the Civil War. We have had a couple of these in our 25+ years in business. It is a CDV image of a bearded general in uniform. What makes it interesting is that early in the war, General Grant was largely unknown to the general population. Grant sat for a portrait at a photographic studio in Cairo, IL in October of 1861 following his promotion to the rank of brigadier general. A fellow bearded Union officer, purportedly a beef contractor named Bill Grant, also visited the studio around the same time. By 1862, in the wake of his impressive military achievements, the editors of Harper's Weekly sought out a photograph of Grant and were presented with two versions of this spurious portrait, which actually depicts Bill Grant. One version appeared on the cover of Harper's Weekly on March 8, 1862, while the second version, offered here, was distributed for public sale in CDV format. On the bottom of the card it has the photography studio marking of "FROM LOWELL'S COMMERCIAL COLLEGE, BINGHAMTON, N.Y." Below that, it has "MAJ.-GEN. U.S. GRANT". A neat little piece from the Civil War.
