Rivited & Soldered Backmarked Confederate Staff Officer's Coat Uniform Button CS5
Click on an image to enlarge
This is an excellent non-excavated 24mm coat size Confederate staff officer's button. This is the style listed as CS5 in Albert's button book and as CS205A6 in Tice's button book. It has a beautiful droop-wing eagle on the face with a thick darker patina all over. The eagle is in front of a lined background and there are the 11 stars around the edge. The back and shank are intact with a clear RIVET'D & SOLDER'D" with a coat of arms backmark. This is one of the tougher to find maker's marks on these buttons. It is a high quality button that would have been imported through the Union blockade for purchase by a well-to-do Confederate staff officer. This is the same style button face that is on the coat that General Lee wore when he surrendered at Appomattox. The coat is now on display at the Museum of the Confederacy in Richmond, Virginia. We got a good buy on this one and thought we would pass it along.
