Original Civil War Model 1860 Naval Cutlass With Brass Basket Guard
Click on an image to enlarge

This is a nice original Civil War naval cutlass. It is the classic model 1860 that you associate with the Union navy of the Civil War. The blade has an attractive untouched look and a length at 25-1/2 inches. Along the edge, it has numerous nicks from lots of service. At the base of the blade you can no longer see the maker's mark. On the back of the blade is where at one time it would have had the scroll style maker's mark from the famous Ames Manufacturing Company of Chicopee, Massachusetts. Ames was the premiere sword producer for the U.S. Government during the Civil War. We know it is a Civil War sword because they stopped making this pattern after the war. There wasn't another navy cutlass model until the U.S. model 1917. It has the basket style guard still present with a nice well worn tone to the brass. The handle has been worn look to the leather with some of the wooden core visible. This is a good honest Civil War naval cutlass that is still affordable.
