WOW! That's what comes to mind when you 1st look at this sword. This is a gorgeous Confederate mounted artillery saber. It is the southern version of the classic model 1840 mounted artillery sword. We know who made this one from a mile away. They are so distinctive because of the scabbard that is constructed of brass. When you see this brass scabbard. You know that the sword was manufactured by the firm of Thomas Griswold of New Orleans, Louisiana. When you pull the sword out of the scabbard, you see their maker's Mark at the base of the blade. You can still see the majority of the stamping that reads "THOMS GRISWOLD & CO" over the "NEW ORLEANS". The blade is full-length at 31 inches. The handguard of the sword is the correct artillery pattern with the single branch. It has the original smooth side, pommel cap intact holding the sword together. When you look closely you can see the distinctive line where the 2 sides of the pommel were cast separately and then joined together. This is a classic trait of New Orleans produced edged weapons. The handle on these swords are constructed using a wooden core that is wrapped with fine quality black leather and then they apply the double twist brass wire to hold it all in place. This one has 100% of the wooden core intact with the pigskin leather and the double twist brass wire being restored. As for the scabbard of the sword, it has a gorgeous untouched color to the brass metal. Both of the mounts are intact as well as the brass rings. When you look at the rings on the mounts of the scabbard you see that it has seen a ton of service wear. At the top of the scabbard, It was missing the original false throat and we had a restored one applied to the scabbard. What makes this sword extra special is that between the mounts it is beautifully engraved with "C.S.A." and below the mount, it has the soldier's initials of "T.J.R.". What a cool personal touch on a Confederate sword! This is a fantastic sword that is ready for your relic room wall.
