Confederate General John Echols Autograph on an 1888 Stock Certificate

Here is an original autograph of a well known Confederate General. This is the signature of Confederate General John Echols (1823-1896). Echols was born in Lynchburg, Virginia on March 20th 1823. He studied law at Harvard and worked as an attorney before the War. He started the War with the 27th Virginia Infantry and was part of the Stonewall Brigade. He was wounded in action at Kernstown on March 16th 1862. While recovering, he was promoted to Brigadier General. He saw further service at New Market, Cold Harbor and then to the Carolinas and surrendered in Augusta, Georgia. He went back to the law after the War and died on May 24th 1896 in Staunton, Virginia. The autograph is in ink on an 1888 dated stock certificate for the Paducah (Kentucky) Union Depot Co. When they took the certificate out of circulation. they stamped the holed over the signatures to prove it was no longer usable. The paper measures 15-3/4ths inches by 7 inches in overall size. It is accompanied by a Xerox image of the General in his Confederate Uniform.
