This is a nice looking original Civil War era cavalry saber in scabbard. This is the model 1860 pattern that was the most carried style during the Civil War. This one has a full-length blade with a gray color to the steel with a nice look. The blade has a pretty bright tone as you can see. At the base of the front of the blade are the production date of 1863 along with the "US" mark and the inspector initials of "M.". On the back of the blade is the remnants of the maker's mark of the C. Roby Company of West Chelmsford, Massachusetts. Christopher Roby was one of the premier makers of Civil War cavalry saber and as you can see they made a quality product. The guard and pommel cap are made of brass. The guard and pommel cap both have a pleasing tone to the brass. The leather grip has had the double strand brass wire intact and displays well. The leather is the original leather and it is about 90% complete. The sword is accompanied by an original metal scabbard. Both of the mounts are present as well as the rings and throat. This is a nice solid Civil War cavalry saber that will make a solid addition to your collection.
