VOLTIGEURS! French Model 1850 Voltigeurs Corse Double Barreled Carbine

Here is the first one of these I have ever been able to offer. This is the French Model 1850 Voltigeurs Corse Double Barreled Percussion Carbine. The United States had a Voltigeur service which was a well armed heavily equipped strike force of riflemen. Upon first glance, this looks like a regular shotgun but it is far from regular. The double barrels fire a bullet of .69 Caliber. The barrels each measure 32-1/4th inches in length. The barrels are retained by a single wedge and a hooked breech. It has the back action percussion locks with dual triggers and the action still works on both sides. One thing that makes this gun special is that it has a lug for a knife bayonet on right side. It used the large socket so that it could go over both of the barrels. The bayonets are extremely scarce but you see more of them than the guns surviving. On the underside of the gun it is equipped with sling swivels and an iron ramrod. It is completely unmarked except for the diamond shaped touch marks on the locks, buttplate tang and triggerguard tang. These interesting "double barrel carbines" were produced in limited numbers for use by the French militia against the marauding bandits on the island of Corsica. What a cool gun and it's almost surely that your friends won't have one.
