The Youngest Major General in the Confederacy Pierce Manning Butler Piece Autograph

Here is a cool autograph of one of the most ambitious of all Confederate Generals, Pierre Manning Butler Young. Young was born in Spartanburg, South Carolina on November 15th 1863. He graduated Georgia Military Institute in 1856 and then went to West Point Military Academy where his roommate was George Armstrong Custer. Young resigned from West Point his senior year, just two months before graduation, following Georgia’s secession. He immediately enlisted in the Confederate Army as a second lieutenant in March, 1861. Young quickly rose to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel of Wade Hampton’s Legion and the command of its cavalry. Described as "dashing and gallant", Young often displayed forceful military bearing charging ahead of his troops in an attempt to capture a stronghold. Young is reported to have said, "I’ll be a major general or in Hell in half an hour." Wounded in three separate battles, Young was distinguished for "remarkable gallantry" during the Virginia and Maryland Campaigns, and was promoted to brigadier general in 1863. A year later he was promoted to major general when he returned to Georgia to fight against Sherman’s army. Young is credited with being the youngest major general to serve in the Confederate Army. The autograph is accompanied by a printed biography of his
service as well as a modern Xerox image of the General. The paper that the
autograph is mounted on an acid-free thick board with the actual paper the autograph is on measures 2-3/8ths inches by 1/2 inch in overall size. It is a fine piece of
history!
