Fine Civil War Soldier's Bulleye Canteen With Partial Gratz Maker Marking
Click on an image to enlarge
This is a nice solid Civil War bullseye pattern canteen. The pewter spout has the last portion of the maker's mark of "R.H. GRATZ & Co. PHILADA." You can only see the "PHILADA" marking but they were the only company that I can find that used that partial abbreviation. They had contracts with the U.S. Government for manufacturing Civil War canteens in 1862 & 1863. This is the style with the Bullseye rings on the outside. All three of the sling loops are present on the sides of the canteen. This one is well worn but displays superbly from all angles. If you have wanted a canteen that you know for sure is Civil War production then this one is for you as they didn't make any after the Civil War.
