Here is a nice looking original canteen from the 1800's. This is the style that was widely used during the Indian Wars and even through the Spanish-American War. This is the style that is known as the model 1874. They took the Civil War canteens and removed the bottom loop off of the bottom of the canteen body. They replaced the Civil War shoulder sling with a web cotton strap that was wide and used a brass adjuster buckle. On the canteen itself it has the fine original cover intact and you can still see the lettering on the side. It reads "M / 5 MASS / U.S. / 100". This lets us know that it was used by a soldier int he 5th Massachusetts. On the back of the canteen body it has a rectangular acceptance stamp in ink. At the top of the canteen it has the original pewter spout remaining as well as the cork stopper. This is a great looking display piece from the 1870's.
