U.S. Grant Image Engraved Pocket Watch by M.J. Tobias of Liverpool
Click on an image to enlarge
Here is a very cool piece! This is an original Civil War era pocket watch featuring portrait of the famous Union General and later President, Ulysses S. Grant. This fine watch was manufactured by M.J. Tobias, Liverpool, England, who was one of the foremost watchmakers int he world at that time. The watch case is made of silver washed brass and it has a case diameter 2-1/4th inches and an overall height of 3-1/16th inches. This is a pattern of watch that is known double Hunter case pocket watch meaning it opens from the front as well as from the back. Both of the lids are stamped with the serial number of 34430. When you open the rear section, you see it is engraved: "Patent / Full Jewelled / M. J. Tobias / Liverpool.". The outside of the back lid has the image of a beautiful large multi-building villa. What makes it special is that the front lid is engraved with a three-quarter portrait of General Grant. Grant is wearing his Uniform with the hat on his head. When you open the watch up, you see the original bezel which is loose. Both of the larger hands are present with the smaller hand missing in action. I don't think it is in running condition but as you see, it displays beautifully from all angles.
