4th Texas Infantry Span-Am "Whistle" Guard Model 1860 Staff Officer's Sword

Here is a very pretty sword from the late 1800's! This is the sword officially referred to as the U.S. model 1860 staff & field officer's sword. This name is a little misleading since almost all of the swords of this pattern were made in the late 1800's. This one was probably made about 1890 or so. It has the very nicely etched blade that is full-length. At the base of the blade it has the maker's mark of the famous "THE PETTIBONE COMPANY". Just down the blade from the retailer's mark it has the patriotic and floral designs etched into the blade. It has a nice untouched color to the brass of the hand guard and pommel cap. The hand guard has the beautiful Union eagle on the clam shell side of the guard. What is special about this sword is that it is the version that has the whistle built into the crossguard. They say they added this feature so that the officer could make field commands with the whistle. The original grip is remaining and is the version that is made out of the wooden core covered with the sharkskin and it has the original wire wrap. The sword is accompanied by the original scabbard that is complete and has a very nice look all over. What makes this one extra special is what I found under the clamshell folding guard. It is hand engraved during the time of use with "J.R. HOLMAN / CAPTAIN / CO. M. 4TH REGT. / T.V.I.". When I looked Holman up, I found that he served as the Captain of the 4th Texas Volunteer Infantry during the Spanish American War. It shows that Company M came from Comanche, Texas. I haven't fully researched him or the regiment. I will leave that for you. It is a cool sword with an honest ID for your sword collection.
