Original Civil War Soldier's Smoothside Canteen Found in Corinth, Mississippi
Click on an image to enlarge
This is a nice original Civil War soldier's canteen that is in excavated condition. You can just picture the soldier using this one in battle or in a Civil War campsite. This is the style referred to by collectors as the "smoothside" pattern because it is made without the reinforcement rings that were designed on the side of the canteen body. It has none of the strap loops present on the sides of the canteen. At the top of the canteen it has the original pewter spout intact. As you can see this one has some small holes but still displays well and is priced accordingly. The verbal history that accompanied this canteen is that it was recovered years ago in the Corinth, Mississippi area. Corinth was the staging area for the Confederates before the battle of Shiloh and was also the site of a fierce battle in October of 1862. This is a nice well used but not abused canteen.
