This is a very scarce gun that is seldom seen in fine shape like this! This is the tough to find gun that is officially known as the U.S. model 1851 "Cadet" musket. They are easy to distinguish because they look like a regular model 1842 musket that has been shrunken down. They only made these guns from 1851 until 1853 and during that time they only made a total of 4,000 of them and only 2,840 of them were for the 1852 year of production. In Flayderman's guide they state that these guns are .57 caliber and have the barrel length of 40 inches. The lockplate has the crisp 1852 date as well as the mark of the famous Springfield Arsenal. In front of the hammer it has the crystal clear Union eagle with the "US" stamped below. The action works catches on both positions. The barrel is full-length at 40 inches and it has a nice dusty bore all the way down. At the breech of the barrel it has the very clear eagle and inspector stamps still visible. It has the clear 1852 date of production as well. The barrel on these cadet guns are .57 caliber compared to the usual .69 caliber of the model 1842 musket counterparts. On the underside of the barrel it has an incorrect style replacement ramrod. Both of the sling swivels are present as well. The stock has a fine dark tone to the walnut wood. You can tell that this one was used but never abused. This is a just a great original model 1851 cadet musket.
