This is an original socket bayonet for the Civil War era Potsdam style musket. The large bore muskets are often referred to by collectors as the Potsdam or Prussian muskets of the 1809 pattern. This pattern is illustrated on pages 103 to 105 in the book entitled European Bayonets of the American Civil War by Noe & Serbaroli. They state that they produced over 300,000 of this model of muskets at the Prussian armories, which were located in Potsdam, Niesse, Spandau, Saarn and Danzig. The guns themselves were originally produced in flintlock, but word converted to percussion so they could stay in service. They saw use during the Civil War on both sides and we have found parts to these muskets here in the Shiloh area over the years. It has the blade that has been trimmed down to 14-1/2 inches. This one is .71 in caliber and still has the distinctive notch on the back of the socket where it attached to the spoon attachment on the end of the barrel. The socket itself has a nice ancient barn tone all over. It has some rust around the socket and would probably need to be cleaned to go back on a gun. It is important to remember that these guns were all hand fitted so just because your gun is this model doesn't necessarily mean all bayonets will interchange with it. This one is complete and will look nice in your collection.
