Fantastic Civil War "Liberty and Union" Folding Dirk Knife by Mackin
Click on an image to enlarge
What a cool knife! This is a wonderful original Civil War "Liberty and Union" folding "Dirk" style Knife by Mackin of Sheffield. When the knife is opened up, it measures 9 1/2-inches overall with a 4 1/2-inch broad spearpoint blade. At the base of the blade, it is marked JOSEPH / MACKIN / SHEFFIELD. Most of the best knifemakers of the world were located in Sheffield, England during this timeframe. This one is one of the finer quality pieces you can find. The blade has been polished to a bright shine and it displays superbly. It is constructed with Staghorn grip scales with a rectangular German silver escutcheon on left side. What makes this one really stand out is the German silver mounts that proudly proclaim the "LIBERTY AND UNION" motto marking in a band on the crossguard quillons. They have the shell and grape vine motifs on pommel. This is truly a great example of a mid-19th century knife. This knife previously sold at Butterfield and Butterfield's Auction in San Francisco in May 1994 Arms and Armor sale [#6036A] as lot 1272. It has a photocopy of B&B invoice included that shows that it brought over $3,000 including the premium in 1994. This is a fantastic piece.
