Here is a great looking sword that has a lot of character. It is an original officer's dress sword for the U.S. Medical Department. This is almost identical to the Civil War version. It has the cast brass crossguard of the handle that has the shield with the integrally cast "MD" lettering that stands for the Medical Department. The handle has the large droop wing pattern Union eagle near the capstan that is made like a pineapple. The blade of the sword is full length at 28 inches. The front side of the blade has the floral designs with the soldier's name in the center. It is beautifully etched "Arthur W. Taylor U.S.A.". On the back side of the blade, it has the matching floral etching with the "Medical Department" designation in the center. At the base of the blade, it has the etched retailer's marking of the famous New York City firm of Schuyler, Hartley & Graham. The blade is accompanied by the original scabbard. the scabbard is the brass bodied version that still retains some of the original silver from the factory. The brass body of the drag has the original brass drag and mounts intact. The mounts still retain all three of the original hanging rings. A quick search of the records show that Arthur W. Taylor is listed as an Assistant Surgeon on June 16th 1880 and made the rank of Captain and Assistant Surgeon on June 16th 1885 and retired on February 5th 1892. They state that he retired because of "Disability in line of duty". Thsi is a cool sword with a lot of character!
