Here is a great looking sword! This is the sword officially referred to as the U.S. model 1860 staff & field officer's sword. This name is a little misleading since almost all of the swords of this pattern were made in the late 1800's. This one was probably made about 1890 or so. It has the very nicely etched blade that is full-length. One thing that makes this sword really stand out is that the blade is detailed in gold. It is a very high grade manufacture with a beautiful look. At the base of the blade it has the maker's mark of the famous "J.M. LITCHFIELD & CO. SAN FRANCISCO, CAL.". Just down the blade from the maker's mark it has the beautiful letter "US" etched into the blade. On the back side of the blade, it has the Union eagle design. It has a nice color to the brass of the hand guard and pommel cap with a great looking amount of the original gold gilding. The hand guard has the beautiful Union eagle on the clam shell side of the guard. It is the high quality version that has the relief style casting which makes the eagle really stand out. On the back side it has the clam shell design that was designed with the button to allow it to fold down so it won't stick in the soldier's side with the button still nicely intact. The original grip is remaining and is the fine version made of cast brass and washed which is made to look like silver. The sword is accompanied by the original scabbard that is complete and has a very nice look all over. The scabbard still retains a fine amount of the original plating from the factory. It has the ornate brass mounts and drag intact. This is a beautifully crafted sword with a cool history from a Rhode Island soldier.
