This is one of the rarest and most desirable of all Confederate Civil War buttons and also one of the most beautifully designed. This one is a beautiful Civil War Confederate South Carolina State Seal coat button and is the style referred to by collectors as the "Palmetto Guard" 21mm coat button. This one has one of the most beautiful die work strikes I have ever seen. The detail on the face is simply superb in all regards. It has the palmetto tree on the face of the button with the motto around the side. The motto reads "Animis Opibusque Parati" which translates as "Prepared in mind and Resources." Where most of the ones you see have the blank on the sides of the tree and a few of the will have the "SC" lettering this one has the desirable "CS" lettering which stands for Confederate States. It also has the snake encircling the trunk of the palmetto tree. It has the rim design that is intended to make its two piece construction look like that of a three pieces design. This is the style that was run through the blockade from England according to Tice's button book. On the back of the button it has the backmark in the fancy script lettering of "EXTRA GOLD QUAL" with the image of a lion. The original shank is intact and in fine shape. This pattern is listed in Albert's button book as SC17 and in Tice's button book as SC286Am1. The verbal history that accompanied this button is that it was recovered in a Confederate occupied area of Aiken, South Carolina. This is a beautiful button that definitely stand out in any collection.
