Artillery Soldier 6th Plate Tintype With His Smith & Wesson Pistol
Click on an image to enlarge
This is a neat looking 6th plate tintype image of a Civil War Union artilleryman in his enlisted frock style military coat. These tintype images were produced by applying the image to a thin sheet of tin, hence the name. This is the size that is known to collectors as the sixth plate size. It measures about 2.75 inches by 3.25 inches in overall size. This image is vividly clear. The image shows the seated view of the soldier and the photographer tinted the uniform red to denote the artillery branch of service. On his head he wears the forage style military hat. On the top of the hat he has the cross cannon insignia of the Artillery branch of service. He holds in his hand a .22 caliber Smith & Wesson revolver and you can see the handle of his knife tucked behind his belt. The image is in a beautiful original gutta percha case has the mat and glass intact. This is a great looking tintype image of an armed artilleryman.
