171st Pennsylvania Attributed Civil War Officer's Sword with Etched Blade
Click on an image to enlarge
This is a fine looking original Civil War officer's sword. This is the nice version that has the floral brass hand guard which lets us know it was for a officer. It has the small "US" in the center of the cast brass handguard. The brass still retains a good bit of the original gold gilding from the factory. This one was made with the etching on sides of the blade. The blade has the "US" on the front side to go along with the floral and geometric designs. On the back of the blade it has the banner in the center with the "E PLURIBUS UNUM" national motto. The brass of the guard and pommel cap has a wonderful color to the brass. The original leather grip handle is intact with a beautiful look to the skin and it has 2 strands of the double twist brass wire present as well as the single strands that flanks the twisted wire. This is the pattern of sword that was made by the famous New Jersey firm of Saubier. It is unmarked but it has their tell-tale blade design and pommel cap. The sword is accompanied by the original leather and brass scabbard. The scabbard is in very attractive shape. One thing that makes this sword special in what is scratched into the inside of the brass handguard. It has "L.B. Camp". When I looked the name up, there was one with that middle initial that was an officer. It was Loomis B. Camp who served with the 171st Pennsylvania Infantry. He had already served with the 13th Pennsylvania before his 171st service. On October 31st 1862 he was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant of the 171st Pennsylvania and served until August 8th 1863 when he mustered out at Harrisburg. A brief printout of his service will accompany the piece. This is a fine looking original Civil War foot officer's sword!
