Click on an image to enlarge
This is a fine looking and rare Southern projectile. It is an original Confederate projectile for the 3.3 inch Confederate rifled cannon. This is the pattern illustrated on page #269 of the 1993 edition of the Dickey & George artillery book. This projectile was designed to explode rather to just slam into the target. They used a percussion "C.S. West Point" style cannon fuse at the top of the shell but this one is missing in action. This one has the entire copper sabot present on the base of the projectile and you can see the original finishing marks from the arsenal in the copper. The iron on these shells were usually constructed of lesser quality iron because of the lack of quality iron available to the deep south producers. The sabot is on the base of the shell is the tall tapering ring which is made of copper. In the book they list these 3.3 Read long sabot shell as being a rarity of 8 out of 10 which is quite scarce. This is a cool looking original Confederate 3.3. inch rifled cannon shell.
