Click on an image to enlarge
This is a very fine original Civil War era amputation saw. This is the large size that would have been used to remove arms and legs. We know this one would is earlier in his production because of the multipiece construction. It has the wooden pattern handle with multiple piece construction that is in fine condition with a few chips. This multi-piece handle is a classic trait of a Civil War era saw because the doctors didn't know that bacteria would build up between the pieces of the handle. After the Civil War they went to a solid 1-piece construction to help prevent infection. Blade of the knife measures 9-3/4ths inches in overall length. The entire piece measures 14 1/2 inches in length. It is a nice large-size piece that would surely turn a good day into a bad day very quickly. The This is a wonderful piece of Civil War era medical history.
