Tough to Find 1861 Issued Bank of Winchester, Virginia $10 Note
Click on an image to enlarge
This is a tough to find bank note. This one was issued by the Bank of Winchester in Winchester, Virginia. It is hand dated from July 15th 1861 in the lower right hand corner. It would have been correctly hand signed and numbered in ink but the ink has faded over the years. The Bank of Winchester was organized in 1853 and operated as a free bank until approximately 1861. With the onset of the Civil War, the bank, along with most others in the state began issuing unregistered notes It measures 7-1/8th inches by 3 inches in overall size. The note is only printed on one side which is referred to by collectors as being "Uniface". This is a note that is not an easy piece to find!
