Superb Autographed Letter of Union General Benjamin "Beast" Butler
Click on an image to enlarge
This is a fine original signature of Civil War Union General Benjamin F. Butler better known as "BEAST BUTLER". He received this nickname because of the brutal treatment he unleashed on the civilians of the City of New Orleans. This autographed typed letter is addressed to his successor as Governor of Massachusetts, William Gaston. It was written from Boston, Massachusetts on March 18th 1885. A short letter that states in full: "I can see you any time after half past three o' clock to-day about the matter which Mr. Greenough mentioned, and I want to see you about another matter." The piece of paper measures 7 inches wide by 9 inch piece of paper and is nice and clear. He was from the state of Massachusetts and during the Civil War he served in several positions. This signature has the rank of Major General. Ironically Butler nominated Jefferson Davis for the U.S Presidency in 1860 on the Democratic ticket. He survived the Civil War and dies in 1893. The original autograph is accompanied by a modern Xerox copy of an image of the General that displays well with it and would even look nice if you had them both framed up on your wall.
