Here is a nice looking .38 caliber rimfire Colt revolver. This is the version known to collectors as the Colt 3-1/2" Round Barrel without Ejector 1862 Cartridge revolver. According to Flayderman they only made these from 1873 until 1880 and they only made about 10,000 of them. He states that they only had 6,500 of them using up the parts from the Colt model 1849 and this is one of them. We know this because of the serial numbers. It was designed to fire a .38 caliber centerfire cartridge from the 3-1/2 inch barrel. These look like they were conversions of earlier guns but this one was made using up the old parts of the earlier model. It has all matching serial numbers of 311,673 except for the original un-numbered barrel wedge that never had a serial number. They cut the back off of the cylinder and milled out the frame to allow the cartridges to be inserted. The mechanics of the gun still work as they should. The side of the frame has the 1871 and 1872 patent date stamps still partially visible. The top of the barrel has the "COLT'S PT.F.A. MFG. Co HARTFORD CT. U.S.A." still visible. As you can see, it has a great tone to the metal on the parts. The mechanics of the gun work on all positions. On the handle of the gun it has an original pair of 1-piece walnut grips intact with an attractive look.
