HOUSTON ISSUED! 1863 Confederate $500 Bond with Secretary Memminger

This is a great looking original Confederate States of America savings bond from 1863. Issued from the Confederate Treasury at Richmond, Virginia it is hand signed and numbered in fine old brown ink and dated March 2nd 1863. This one was issued for $500 and paid 8% interest. In the center of the bond itself it has the likeness of one of the most important men in the Confederate Government, Christopher G. Memminger. He was the Secretary of the Confederate treasury from 1861 till 1864. Under his guidance the Confederate currency was designed and printed. The edges of the top portion have ornate designs with the $500 denominations. In the center of the top it has the palmetto tree which is a nice touch since it was printed in Columbia, South Carolina by Evans & Cogswell. What makes this one extra special is the red stamping and ink inscription in the center of the bond. It has the red ink "This Bond NOT TO BE VALID until Indorsed by the Depository who issues it." Then it has the pen ink inscription that states it was issued in Houston, Texas by James Sorely. This is a great addition to the bond that makes it much more desirable to collectors. At the bottom of the bond are 9 of the interest coupons remaining. This is the style listed as CR-124 in the Confederate bond book. This is a nice displaying original Confederate savings bond that will look great when it is nicely framed up on you office or relic room wall.
