Here is a nice piece that is crisply marked. It is an original .58 caliber Civil War military rifle. This one was made by the Providence Tool Company of Providence, Rhode Island and is so marked on the lockplate. You can read the entire Providence tool marking and also the 1864 production date behind the hammer. Providence Tool Company had a contract for 70,000 of these military rifles which was one of the larger contracts issued by the government during the Civil War. The action catches on both of the two positions. The barrel is full-length with all of the barrel bands present. The front sight is present and the rear sight still has the base and both of the leafs. It has the traces of the matching and correct "1864" production date stamped at the breech. The inside of the barrel still has the original rifling visible. On the top of the buttplate it has the correct Providence Tool Company "US" stamping. Their "US" has an almost halo look to the center of the letters that is different from the rest. The stock is full-length and it has a nice look all over. On the flat of the stock opposite of the lockplate it has the two inspector cartouches still visible. This is the stamp where the gun was approved for the military use by the U.S. Government inspector. It has a modern made replacement ramrod in the channel underneath the barrel and both of the sling swivels are present and original. This is a very nice looking old gun that just needs you wall to go on.
