Click on an image to enlarge
Here is a neat original pre-Civil War note. This is a $1.00 note for the Bank of Virginia in Richmond. It is hand dated in ink from May 1st 1862. The bank was originally authorized in 1804 and ultimately grew to a network of nine branches in addition to the parent bank in Richmond. The bank did not survive the end of the Civil War, with the bank's facilities in Richmond being destroyed during the city's capture in 1865. The $1 was a long lived design initially used in the 1840s and later pressed into service as an emergency low denomination issue during the Civil War. The note measures 7 inches by 3-1/8th inches in size. It was professionally graded by the PMG Company and they graded it as "Very Fine". It comes in their holder for display and preservation.
