CDV Image of the Famous USS Lexington Gunboat of Shiloh Battle Fame
Click on an image to enlarge
Here is a great image of the famous USS Lexington gunboat. The USS Lexington was built as a sidewheel steamer at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in 1861 and was purchased by the U.S. War Department and converted into a gunboat at Cincinnati, Ohio. It was placed on the Tennessee River in the early days of the Civil War and was important at several of the early battles. During the Battle of Shiloh it was the Lexington along with the USS Tyler that fired throughout the night to keep the Confederates from resting. It was considered one of the important reasons for the Union winning the battle. In the image you can see the gunports where those cannon were located. The ships are clear as a bell and is the only example of this image that we have encountered. The card has the deterioration on the edges. On the back of the card it has the McPherson & Oliver Photographer marking from New Orleans, Louisiana. What a fantastic and rare image!
