This is a great original autograph of a famous Georgian. This is the signature of Martin Jenkins Crawford (March 17, 1820 â€" July 23, 1883). Crawford was born in Jasper County, Georgia. He became a lawyer and a member of the Georgia bar in 1839. First he was in the Georgia House and then served in the U.S. House of Representatives. He was a signer of the Confederate States of American Constitution. President Davis appointed his as a Special Commissioner to the United States in the early days of the Civil War. He then raised the 3rd Georgia Cavalry Regimentand fought with Joe Wheeler. He fought through the War and surrendered with the Army of Tennessee. He served at the rank of Colonel in the Confederate Service. Crawford died at age 63 in Columbus, Georgia. The signature is on a piece of paper that measures 6-1/4th inches by 1-3/4ths inches in size. The signature is accompanied by a modern made xerox image of Crawford to enhance the display. This is a fine original autograph from an influential Southern politician!
