It isn't often that you see Civil War dated newspapers from the state of California. The state wasn't heavily populated so there weren't a lot of people to sell the papers to in the first place. Those that were printed didn't have a high survival rate. This is an original and the fragile paper has some tears and chips round the edges but the print is still very legible and very interesting. This one is dated from March 11th 1862. It has lots of articles including the description of how the military was embarrassed by the scandal over General Freemont and his purchase of the Hall Carbines. It tells of how the Ordnance Department sold 5,000 outdated Hall Patent carbines for $3.50. They were altered for 75 cents to $1.25 each and then sold to Simon Stevens for $12.50 each. Then General Freemont paid $22.00 each for them back. Government waste at its best. This is a nice original Civil War newspaper from California.
