This artifact is a beautiful embroidered officer's hat insignia. This is the Cross cannon style that denotes the artillery branch of service. It has the red center which is also for artillery. This insignia displays superbly as you can see. The embroidery has a dark ancient tone tot he brass bullion which blends beautifully with the black cloth background. This one was made without having the loops on the back so it could be sewn directly onto the artilleryman's hat. It is a variant of the ones illustrated on page 128 of the Headgear insignia book by O'Donnell and Campbell. On the back of the piece it has some of the original backing remaining and you can see the intricate stitching used to make the piece. It measures 2-1/2 inches by 1-7/8th inches in overall size. This artillery hat insignia is a great artifact from a Union artilleryman!
