Here is an original officer's shoulder board insignia from the Civil War. This is the version that has the single bar on each side of the open field of the strap that denotes the rank of 1st Lieutenant. It has the blue cloth background that let us know that he served in the Infantry branch of service. The blue has faded to a pale blue color over the years. Around the edge it has the nice quality gold bullion. It is the version that has the double border which is a tougher to find version. You can tell that this one was actually worn but never abused. On the back you can see how much work went into the construction. It measures 3-1/2 inches by 1-3/8ths inches in overall size. This is a small but well made insignia. This insignia makes a fine display all the way around.
