Small Size Civil War Embroidered Officer's General Staff Insignia
Click on an image to enlarge
This piece is beautiful! It is a fine original Civil War officer's embroidered hat insignia. This is the pattern that is known as the General Staff hat pin because that is the higher ranking style of officer's hat that it would have originally adorned. This is a variation of the style of hat insignia is like the ones illustrated on page 174 of the insignia book by Campbell and O'Donnell as figure #407/ They are distinctive because of the small size compared to most of the ones you encounter. At the bottom of the page, they show Lt. General Green Smith's kepi hat that has a similar insignia attached. The center of the piece has the beautiful "US" in gilded brass color in the center with wreath. The brass used to make up the designs still retains a beautiful ancient golden color all over. On the back of the piece you can see how many stitches it took to make and there are a ton. You can see that it was designed to be sewn directly onto the hat instead of having attachment loops or pins. The overall size of the piece measures 1-1/2 inches by 1-3/4th inches. This is a beautiful piece from all angles. '
