Rare 1862 Patented Cantel Riveted Leather Civil War Canteen

This is your opportunity to own one of the toughest to find Civil War canteens. This is the pattern that is illustrated and described on page 233 of the Civil War canteen book by Mike O'Donnell. This is the style that was patented on October 14, 1862 by Lazare Cantel of New York City. This canteen is distinctively designed with each side being made using formed leather. Cantel constructed these canteens from 2 heavily saturated pieces of thick leather with a thin layer of tin on the inside to help improve the taste of the liquids inside. The 2 pieces were then join together using copper rivets and at the top it still has the original pewter spout intact. If you notice the openings on each side of the spout that were used for the attachment of the shoulder sling. It measures 9 inches by 7 inches in overall size. This piece is in gorgeous untouched condition and is definitely a keeper.
