Here is a great looking piece of headgear from before the Civil War. These hats were popular in the early days of the war before they realized they weren't function because of the style of construction. They are officially known as the U.S. Model 1851 artillery shako. This one has the remnants of the original maker's mark stamping inside of the hat. It was manufactured by Young, Smith & Company of New York City. The maker book states that they used this name from 1853 until 1859. The front of the hat from the visor to crown stands 5-3/4ths inches tall. It has the classic Model 1851 blue wool body on the shako with tarred leather visor. It has the chin strap with the 2 brass eagle buttons on the sides. They are the classic Civil War staff pattern cuff size buttons. On the front of the hat it has the 3 inch by 2 inch embroidered insignia cross cannon for the artillery branch of service. Above the artillery insignia, it has the embroidered regimental number 42. When you turn the hat over you see the majority of the original sweat band. The silk liner is partially present on the sides and mostly present on the top. On the top lining it has the stamped print retailer marking. These hats were only made until the early days of the War. This is a cool looking hat that you can tell saw service and displays well.
