This is a cool looking gun! This gun is very interesting as well. The lockplate of the gun has the remnants of the desirable "VIRIGINIA" marking as well as traces of the Manufactory. Behind the hammer it has the Richmond, Virginia production location as well as the 1818 production date. As for the gun itself, it has a very cool design that is the classic Virginia Manufactory muskets. When these guns left the factory in 1818 they were made as a flintlock and were converted later on so they could still be used when the flintlock system was replaced by the percussion system. There were 60,000
flintlock muskets recorded in Richmond Arsenal inventory by C.S. Ordnance at
beginning of Civil War. It is assumed that the majority make up the 50,000 issued in flintlock Apr.-Nov. 1861. Contracts later given to various
private firms to convert those arms to percussion as they were recalled from field,
then re-issued to both Virginia and C.S. government troops. Flayderman states that "there is significant information
about the many various alterations to percussion of this model, especially
during the Civil War by the Confederate Government and
which will significantly affect the value of those percussion conversions, is
to be found in an important article, "The Alteration of Virginia Mfty
Weapons 1813-1863," by Giles Cromwell in issue no. 53 (Spring 1985) of the
Journal of the American Society of Arms Collectors." This is one that was converted by changing the hammer and using a an almost Enfield style bolster addition. You can tell by the patina that this gun has been in this configuration for eons. It is likely a Southern "Not pretty but functional" conversion. The Barrel is full-length at 41-3/4th inches. It has the stud style front sight so a socket bayonet could be attached. The mechanics of the lockplate still catches crisply on both positions. The gun is constructed with with the iron buttplate. It has an old Belgian cupped end ramrod in the channel under the barrel but it is a little short as you can see in the one image. It has both of the sling swivels intact. The stock of the gun has a gorgeous ancient well worn look to the walnut wood. This is very cool looking original 1818 dated lockplate Virginia Manufactory musket with tons of character.
