Authentic Civil War Artillery Shells & Cannonballs

Extremely Scarce Confederate Cannon Bolt for Railroad Axle Cannon
Click on an image to enlarge
This is one of the coolest artillery shells ever produced by the Confederacy. It is a solid projectile measuring 4.85" in length. The iron is slick and the mold seam can be made out. It is in beautiful excavated condition. It has both of the lead rifling bands. There have been some of these recovered from Milledgeville, Georgia, have been in the same condition. Less than 30 of these are known to exist and all came from the same area. Documentation from the Columbus Daily Enquirer, dated August 31st, 1861, announced that the Georgia Railroad Machine Shop was manufacturing various cannons including "some 2.25-inch breech loading rifles". The guns are believed to have been manufactured at this location and possibly marked with "Maker: Rushton, Georgia Railroad, Atlanta, GA." The neat thing is that these cannon were reportedly to have been manufactured from the axle of a train. How is that for necessity! This one is in excellent shape and has been cleaned and coated for display and preservation. The last image shows the size of this piece compared to a standard 12# solid shot cannonball. A super rare Confederate projectile.
