ABRAHAM LINCOLN AUTOGRAPHED! 1862 Dated Naval Officer's Commission
Click on an image to enlarge
Here is a wonderful piece! It is an authentic Civil War US Naval Officer's Commission. What is special about this one is that it is hand signed by the 16th President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln. This commission is pre-printed on the high quality velum that measures 14 inches by 17 inches in overall size. with the blanks filled in with fine brown ink. This commission is dated from July 17th 1862. The document promotes Arthur Burtis Jr. an Assistant Paymaster in the United States Navy. The commission itself is a thing of beauty. It has the Union eagle at the top with the ships in the background. At the bottom it has the God and Goddess image with the ships in the background as well. At the very bottom it has the cannon design with the flags in the background and it has the original applied seal of the navy. On the right hand side it has the distinctive complete ink signature of Abraham Lincoln that is slightly faded but legible. On the left hand side it has the signature of the Secretary of the Navy, Gideon Welles. When I looked up the service of Burtis, I found that he dedicated his whole life to the service of his country. He was born in 1841 in Oxford, New York and joined the Navy in 1862. He stayed in the navy until the early 1900's and he died in 1908. During the Civil War, he served on the USS Sagamore, the USS Connecticut and the USS Muscoota. Burtis Jr. would receive later promotions long after the Civil War, including to Pay Inspector (1891) and Pay Director (1899). The brief history print out will accompany the commission as well as a modern Xerox image of President Lincoln. It is a great document with an authentic Lincoln autograph!
