This is your opportunity to own an extremely scarce version of military rifle musket. This is the .58 caliber military rifle musket that was made at the famous Harpers Ferry Armory just before the outbreak of the Civil War. The lock plate has the desirable Harpers Ferry maker's Mark as well as the 1860 production date. The lock plates of these guns were designed to utilize the Maynard patent tape primer instead of the normal percussion cap. You can see that the edge of the hammer has the notch that was designed to cut the primer tape. They only produced these guns from 1857 until 1861 and according to Flayderman's guide they only produced 8,700 of them. This one has the full-length 33 inch round barrel with the original rifling on the inside of the barrel. At the breech of the barrel, it has the Harpers Ferry proof marks. You can see traces of the original matching and correct 1860 production date. These late production guns were produced with the shorter range rear sight and this one is still nicely intact as is the original front sight. The sight is the 1858 Pattern three-leaf, short base rear sight with the 500-yard sight leaf appropriately marked "R" for the rifle and the other leaf is not marked. These later productions are also produced with the iron patch box on the side of the shoulder flat. These later productions are entirely iron mounted and all of the metal surfaces have a pleasant gray tone that was cleaned to bright and has toned down over the years. The stock of the gun is constructed from a single piece of high grade Walnut wood and as you can see it displays beautifully with a slight bumps and bruises from service. On the flat of the stock opposite of the lock plate it has the remnants of the inspector cartouches. Underneath the gun it has a reproduction ramrod with the swollen shank design. It has both of the sling swivels intact under the gun as well. If you have wanted a good looking, scarce late production model 1855 rifle from the Harpers Ferry Armory, then this is your chance.
