This is a great piece! I have had several of these over the years but this is as nice as I've ever had. It is a Confederate made naval cutlass/ bowie knife. This is the pattern illustrated as figure 31-AA in Albaugh's Illustrated History of Confederate Swords. He states that they were probably manufactured by the Union Car Works at Portsmouth, Virginia just across the river from Norfolk. After that book was published, further information has shown that these were made by the Naval Iron Works in Columbus, Georgia. This one is in nice condition with an ancient look. These are constructed using a turned wooden handle. The overall size of the piece is 23-5/8ths inches with 18 of those inches being the massive double sided blade. It has the distinctive iron hand guard with the swirl pattern. The original turned wooden handle has a great weathered and used look all over. On one side of the wood it has the carved initials "P.J.A.". What a great artifact! If you have wanted a true Confederate cutlass/bowie knife without spending several thousand then this one is for you.
