When this sword left the retailer it was a true thing of beauty! This is a very detailed sword that is almost more of a work of art in design rather than a weapon. This is the French style designed sword that would have been made by the famous Newark, New Jersey Maker, Henry Sauerbier. It is a variation of the one illustrated and described in John Thillmann's book on Army Swords of the Civil War on pages 357 and 358. This fine quality sword would have been privately purchased by a well-to-do Union officer. The cast brass hand guard has the droop wing style Union eagle in front of the spray of flags with the 13 stars above the eagle. On the back side of the guard it has the design of a cloverleaf in the brass. The guard is the fine quality with the gold gilding. It has the large pommel cap with the red jewel on the top and on the side, it has the inlaid pewter scroll with the "UNION" lettering. The handle of the sword is a high quality as the rest of the handle. It has the German silver grip with the twisted brass wire wrapping. The twisted wire is flanked on each side by the single strand brass wire. The blade of the sword is one of the fine quality blades that is the Sauerbier style pattern with the original patriotic etching on each side of the blade. The sword blade is full-length at 31 inches with the overall size of the sword measuring 37 inches. The front side of the blade has the stylish "US" lettering in the center. There is traces of the original gold wash from the factory on the etching. On the back side of the blade, it has the etched battle scene in addition to the other floral and patriotic designs. The sword is accompanied by the original brass and leather scabbard and the scabbard is a very fine quality as you can see. Each of the mounts and also the drag have been embellished with floral designs. The leather is the version that has the detailed designs on the front side. The leather has been reinforced in a couple of spots and the work was museum quality. This is a heck of a lot of sword!
