WAR DATE! January 1862 Dated Slave Bill of Sale From Memphis ONE OF THE LAST!
Click on an image to enlarge
This is one of the last bills of sale for slaves in Memphis. This is a pre-printed bill of sale with black ink on high quality blue reed paper. The paper measures 4 inches by 8 inches in size. This one is dated in ink from January 20th, 1862, and is from Memphis, Tennessee. The slave was purchased by Margaret Hobert (?) for $900 for a girl named Martha, age 17 years. She was sold by Butler and Williamson. It is printed that the sellers have "The right and title of said slave we warrant and defend against the claims of all persons whomsoever, and likewise warrant her sound in body and mind and a slave for life.". The date of this one is important because Memphis fell to the Union Army on June 6, 1862, following a naval battle on the Mississippi River that resulted in a decisive Union victory and a permanent change in control of the city. This event marked a significant loss for the Confederacy, impacting their hold on the crucial Mississippi River. This would make this document one of the last slave bills from Memphis. It has been nicely framed and matted in a frame that measures 12- 3/4ths inches by 16-1/2 inches in overall size. This is a very rare piece that is ready for your wall!
