This is on that you very seldom get a chance to own. It is a very attractive Confederate staff officer's coat button. It has the eagle with the "droop" style downturned wings. In the shield on the eagle's chest you can clearly see the large shield with the bold "CSA' letters. The eagle is on a lined background and around the edges it has 11 six pointed stars. This is the pattern that is listed as CS1 in Albert's button book and as CS201a4 in Tice's button book. This is one of the most beautiful of all Civil War production Confederate buttons. This style adorned many of the coats of the highest ranking Southern leaders. The reverse of this button has the original shank intact and perfectly straight. It has the desirable retailer's mark of "HALFMANN & TAYLOR MONTGOMERY". They were high end retailers in Montgomery, Alabama. They would have imported this beautiful button from England where it was manufactured so it could be purchased by a Southern officer. The button has a great look and you can tell that this is one that was actually worn but well taken care of. You will have a hard time finding a better button looking than this beauty!
