New Bern, North Carolina Confederate Made Antler Gripped D-Guard Bowie Knife

Here is one of the coolest knives I have seen in quite a while. This is a fantastic original Confederate D-guard Bowie Knife. This is one of the fierce Confederate fighting knives made in the South during the early days of the War. It is crafted with an 11-3/4ths inch blade with a clip pint to the tip. The knife smith made the grip of the knife out of an antler. They used these because of their durability as well as the cool look. When they crafted the hand guard out of iron, they shaped the bow to match the curve of the antler. He also finished the guard off with the very long curving quillion. There are a coupe of more things that make this knife really stand out. First is that it is accompanied by the original leather and tin sheath. The body of the sheath has the leather body that is detailed with the grapevine pattern on the front side. At the top of the sheath, it has the tin band that holds the sheath body together with the remnants of the belt attachment. The second and wonderful thing is the incised inscription along the back of the sheath. It proudly reads "New Bern NC March 14 1862". The Battle of New Bern (also known as the Battle of New Berne) was fought on March 14, 1862, near the city of New Bern, North Carolina, as part of the Burnside Expedition of the American Civil War. The US Army's Coast Division, led by Brigadier General Ambrose Burnside and accompanied by armed vessels from the North Atlantic Blockading Squadron, were opposed by an undermanned and badly trained Confederate force of North Carolina soldiers and militia led by Brigadier General Lawrence O'B. Branch. Although the defenders fought behind breastworks that had been set up before the battle, their line had a weak spot in its center that was exploited by the attacking Federal soldiers. When the center of the line was penetrated, many of the militia broke, forcing a general retreat of the entire Confederate force. General Branch was unable to regain control of his troops until they had retreated to Kinston, more than 30 miles (about 50 km) away. New Bern came under Federal control, and remained so for the rest of the war. So you get the wonderful original Confederate made D-guard Bowie knife with the New Bern, North Carolina battle attribution.
