Wonderful Confederate Second Lieutenant Quarter Plate Tintype
Click on an image to enlarge
This is a great looking quarter plate tintype image of a Civil War Confederate in his shell style military coat. These tintype images were produced by applying the image to a thin sheet of tin, hence the name. This is the size that is known to collectors as the quarter plate size. This means that the image measures approximately 4.25 inches by 3.25 inches in size. This image is vividly clear as you can see. The image shows the seated legs-up view of the young Confederate soldier. He wears his militia style "shell" military coat and has the pretty tone. On the collar of the coat, it has the single bar insignia. This is the Confederate rank insignia for a Second Lieutenant. He has his gauntlet on one hand and the other hand clasps the other gauntlet. The image is in a beautiful full leatherette case. There is a sheet of paper accompanying the image that states it was from the Herb Peck Collection at one time and refers to the young man looking like the soldiers in an image of Colonel John Singleton Mosby's cavalry men. This is a great looking tintype image of a young Confederate fighting man that looks ready for action.
