Here is a fine looking sword with a cool history! This is an original Civil War foot officer's sword & scabbard carried by a soldier from the 75th New York Infantry. It has a beautiful blade etching presentation and the presentation is even recorded in the regimental history. The sword itself has the full-length 30-1/4th inch slightly curved single-edged spear point
blade. The sword measures 36 in overall length, with the hilt making up 6 of those inches. The handle of the sword is made of cast gilt
brass guard with the floral pattern for an officer's use. The handle itself has the shank skin cover with the spring style twisted brass wire. The backside of the blade has the maker's mark of the P.D. Luneschloss maker in Solingen. On the other side of the blade, it is clearly etched by the retailer, Tiffany & Company of New York. P.D.L. manufactured many of the edged weapons sold by Tiffany during the Civil War. The blade is detailed with a 17 inch etched panel with foliate scrolls, martial and patriotic
themes, including panoplies of arms, and a striking eagle with the "E PLURIBUS UNUM" banner. On the back side of the blade, it has the "US" lettering in the center of the etching. The sword is accompanied by its black leather scabbard with engraved
gilt brass mounts. The lower drag of the sword is a replacement using an English style drag. The scabbard body is decorated with incised lines and
has a rear seam. What makes this sword extra special is beautifully engraved on the back side of the brass top scabbard mount. It proudly reads "Presented to / Capt. John Choate / from / Niagara Fire Co. No. 3 / Oct. 24th 1861." The records show that, John Choate was a resident of Auburn, New York when he enlisted on September 21, 1861 as a Captain. He was commissioned into "H" Company, New York 75th Infantry on November 18, 1861. The regiment went to the Department of the Gulf, being stationed successively at Pensacola and New Orleans. He was discharged on November 19, 1862 due to ill health. The city of Auburn, New York is where the Fire Hose Company No. 3 was located. The sword is accompanied by a binder of
information and research regarding Choate and his service, copies of
records and research, etc. This is a great sword from a man that fought both fires and Southerners.
